The Cricket Bat - A Tool of the Trade

Cricket bats are a key tool used in cricket besides the ball. Bats are described as scapulars, flat on one side and V-shaped on the opposite side. This is believed to improve airflow around the bats, making them swing faster and with more power. The material the bats are made of is willow wood of choice for bats because it is strong, lightweight, and impact resistant. The bats are also treated with linseed oil, which is used to provide extra protection and also create more friction on the ball, giving the bats more control while playing cricket.

Until the 18th century, cricket bats were shaped like modern hockey sticks. This suggests that early cricket games were played using rogue shepherds as bats. Although there is not much evidence of a very early cricket, the bat has still existed since 1729 and is representative of the earliest form of the cricket bat.

When purchasing new cricket bats, be sure to make sure that the bat is well prepared for playing cricket and will last a long time. Before using a new cricket bat, it must be hit. The process of knocking out the bat is carried out by repeatedly hitting the bat with either a cricket ball or using a special cricket hammer. The cricket bat's punching process will seal the fibers in the willow wood, making it more durable so it won't break on first use. The knocking down process can take 3 to 6 hours and often consists of 8000-9000 blows to the bat. Pre-hammered bats are available in the market for a slightly higher price, but this saves the player time having to batter down, instilling confidence during the game that the bat will survive the task at hand.

Law 6 of cricket states that cricket bats must be no more than 97 centimeters long and no more than 10.8 centimeters wide. It is important to note that it says that the hand holding the bat counts as part of it, so the hand hits the ball, this counts as a hit. The rule also states that bats can only be made of wood.

When choosing the type of cricket bats that you want to use, you must carefully consider the type of your player, be it a big hitter or someone who likes to choose their punches by hitting them. You should also consider the size and weight of the cricket bat before purchasing, as too often games get in the way of playing with a bat that is too small or large or weighs too much. It is recommended to use a lighter bat, especially at a young age, in order to better control the ball while playing.
